I don’t feel like…

November 20, 2011

The Distro hopping seems to be halted for now.  I am using Lubuntu.  I don’t feel like going through the work to use Arch right now.  I will need to move from Lubuntu at some point in the future but right now it works.  There are a few little details that annoy me but I am using my netbook and it takes too much time and effort to keep redoing it.  When the time comes that I have my desktop computer again I will be going through the steps to figure out what Distro to use next.

I am going to start making entries in this blog because I need an outlet.  It probably won’t be much more informative then it has been in the past.  I will attempt to make it into a place that people want to read.   I have some ideas of things that I want to do with tech and this is the place where I will chronicle them.  The new thoughts will start flowing here shortly.

ArchBang

November 17, 2011

I downloaded the ISO for ArchBang and figured out how to put it on a flash drive.  It works. I am not sure what I think of it using Openbox as a window manager.  I will probably leave it on my flash drive and boot off of it on occasion just to see if I can get used to the way it works.

ArchBang doesn’t have as many applications installed as I would like but there are instructions on how to install them included on the disk.  It has only one application listed under productivity.  It is a text editor called Zathura.   I am finding that I would choose vastly different things to install from what is usually included by default in most distros.  I might have to do a scratch install of Arch just so I can select the applications which I like without having to weed out the ones I don’t.

I am going to list out some of the applications which I would choose.

Google Chome, LibreOffice writer, Audacious, Audacity, Thunderbird, The Gimp, and VLC .

Those are the main applications that I use on a daily basis.  I could substitute abiword for LibreOffice Writer I guess.  It would reduce some of the dependencies.  I am still not sure what I would use as a window manager.  I guess Lxde would work.  That is what I am using right now on my Lubuntu install and it works ok for the most part.

Distro Hopping

November 17, 2011

I am still stuck with a limited collection of tech.  As far as computers go I have my netbook.  An eeepc seashell.  It is usefull in a very limited way.  I have it set up to dual boot between windows 7 and Linux.  Currently It is running lubuntu 11.10.  In the last couple of weeks I have tried Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, and will soon be rejecting Lubuntu.   I am thinking that it might be time to move to some other Linux Family.  I might even succeed this time.  I have tried moving to other distros before without much luck.  I think this time will be different.  I have begun to detest lots of the design choices that are going into Ubuntu.  Unity Sucks big time.  KDE 4  sucks also.  I think I just like the more traditional desktop experience.  That will probably rule out gnome 3 as well.  I tried Xubuntu and too many things Just did not work.  The Devil is in the details and most of the details in Xubuntu are just broken.  Lubuntu is better but still has a bunch of very annoying details that don’t work quite the way they should.  I am seriously thinking of using arch.

I like Arch Linux but have rejected it in the past because it takes so much time to configure to the point where you can actually use it to get work done.  I know that has not changed so I will probably use a Arch derivative like ArchBang.  Something that is all set up and ready to go.  Archbang is just Arch with a desktop environment already installed.  I don’t remember off the top of my head what desktop it uses but I can tell you for sure it is not gnome or kde.  Lightweight on a netbook is the way to go.

Of course it might make more sense to go with Vanilla Debian as I mostly know how that works already.  I will have to think about this some more.

I got real sick of windows 7. After getting to iowa I decided to set my netbook up dual boot. I am currently using ubuntu 11.04 in classic mode. It works for now. I kept windows 7 starter around because I thought I might need it at some point. I do have a tendency to boot directly into Ubuntu and It makes me feel so much better about not having my desktop computer. I was somewhat reluctant to make the shift because the eeepc i currently my primary computer. If I had made a mistake I could have had serious computer issues.

I am using my cell phone’s camera to take pictures. I then transfer the pictures from the phone to the tablet using bluetooth. After the pictures are on the tablet I transfer them to my eee pc using a cable. The system has way too many steps but seems to work. I tried hooking the phone directly to the computer but it detects as a modem rather then a drive.

I finally found a way to change the wall paper on my asus eeepc seashell netbook.   It is not perfect but it works.

I don’t think it will work on any other netbook though  It is asus specific.

Due to some thing beyond my control I have had to move.  I am in the middle of moving from Washington to a small town in iowa.  I have had to leave most of my stuff behind.  It is at my parents house so It is still mine. Which is good.   My tech is reduced to my asus eeepc, an android tablet, my cell phone, and a cheap boom box.  I am currently in tulsa.  I got the boom box and cell phone after getting here.  The rest of what I have amounts to my clothes and a few books.  This is going to be an adventure.

I am still using windows 7 starter on my netbook.  Every day I feel like I am moving closer to nuking it and installing Linux. I have not done so yet because I am not certain what version I should use.  I really do not like the new interface that ubuntu uses.  It feels like a very klunky Kludge.  I don’t like the way it seems to hide everything.  I am seriously thinking about moving to KDE over Gnome because Gnome 3 looks like just as much of a kludge as unity.  That will equate to kubuntu or OpenSuse.     I like OpenSuse and haven never used Kubuntu.  I have to try something soon.

Not Much has gotten done today.  I made Stroganoff over rice for dinner.  I will be leaving for bible study in a few minutes.

April 11, 2011

I have updated my desktop to Ubuntu 11.04.  I am not sure that I like unity all that much.  It just seems to hide things too much.  I was thinking about trying something different for a while but I am also feeling quite lazy.  I will probably end up sticking with Ubuntu 11.04 for a while.

I did have one odd issue.  For some reason the X key was configured to launch the file manager.  It was quite irratating untill I figured out to open the keyboard shortcut menu and change the home button from x to control + alt+ X.
