I have found my CD-ROM drive and bought a box of disks. I am not certain where my extra hardrive went but I am going to start without it. I can always start over later. My cdrom drive is a Microsolutions backpack cdrom supposedly it is supported by the paride driver. The last time I tried to get it working I was unable to but that might have been my own incompetence.

April 17, 2008Toshiba project on temporary hold.
April 5, 2008My tosiba project is on temporary hold. I am unable to locate some of the hardware I need. Ie my spare hardrive and the cd-rom drive. I also need to get some floppy disks and use my mother’s computer to make the nessisarry boot disks. I am bugged by the lack of floppy drives in modern computers. It makes working with older tech rather difficult at times.
I did follow the instructions I found for replacing the harddrive and found that to be a piece of cake. It took about twenty minutes to open it up, take out the hardrive, put it back and close everything up.
goals for my Toshiba
March 28, 2008The reason for this project is simple. I Like to tinker and this tiny, ancient machine provides that opportunity. Tinkering with my primary laptop would be very stupid.
That being said my goal is to install Deli Linux on it. Deli linux is designed to run on old machines and has a fairly helpful forum.
I would like to use this for some journaling during the times when my wife borrows my Acer Aspire 3680.
The Test Subject
March 28, 2008The test subject is a Toshiba Portege 610 CT simular to the one listed here Linux On Toshiba Portege 610CT. The main difference is that mine only has a 512 megabyte hard drive.
The Specs.
-
Pentium 90
-
512 megabyte hardrive
-
40 megabytes of ram
-
LCD Monitor
I have the external floppy and a Microsolutions Backpack CDrom drive.
My first step will be figuring out how to replace the hardrive as it has some bad sectors and I need something bigger. I will dig through my pile of junk. I am sure that I have at least a two gig laptop hard drive laying around somewhere.
