Arch

July 22, 2009 by ymra

I am exprimenting with Arch Linux on my desktop.  I don’t know that I will keep it for  very long as it takes so much time and effort to get it to the point where you can actually use the computer.  I have it close but it is not quite there.

Currently I have LXDE and firefox installed as far as X and it’s apps go.  I tried dillo but it doesn’t do http mail without recompiling.  I have sound in x but not in the console.  Networking is running so I can acess the internet.

not much to say

I have not had much to say lately.  I am using my netbook a lot and enjoying it.  I need to get back in the mood to experiment.  Untill I do this site will probably languish.

Laptop Adventures

Income Tax time has come and gone.  Out of my income tax I purchased an Acer Aspire ONE  Running Windows XP.  Since I have that I decided that the Aspire 3680 could become a test machine.  I backed it up and ran the restore.  I then deleted the D drive and used space It had occupied to install Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope.  It took several tries to get it right but it is now up and running.  The wireless (Broadcom) works  pretty much out of the box.   I had to use the restricted drivers manager to get it working but that was no big deal since the drivers were on the install cd.

Offline Journal

February 26, 2009 by ymra

I use a script that I got from http://www.marcelgagne.com/daily_journal.html. It works very well as long as you remember that *nix is case sensitive. I had to redo the script after reinstalling my computer and had some trouble getting the script to work. It ended up that I had spelled Journal with a capital J in the script and the directory where the files were supposed to be located was journal with a lower case j.

Drivel

February 26, 2009 by ymra

I finaly figured out how to configure Drivel to work with wordpress. I fought with it for a while the last time I installed Ubuntu on my desktop with no success. I could not find any information about it either. With my current install I decided to try again and did another google search. I found the information I was looking for almost instantly. You set the server type to movable type and add /xmlrpc.php to the end of the server address. I am glad to get that figured out as the web interface can be slow.

Reinstall

February 26, 2009 by ymra

I  just reinstalled my desktop.  I installed Ubuntu 8.10.  I had to install it twice because I forgot to add the mount point for my home directory during the partioning step.  This blog helped me remember the names of some of the software that I had installed and needed to reinstall after I reinstalled the operating system.

New Toy

February 13, 2009 by ymra

Last thursday I was at the goodwill and found an imac.  It is running os 9.2.2.  It has a 500 megahurts ppc processor, 256 megs of ram and a 30 gig harddrive.  I have been looking for a decent webbrowser for it but have not had any luck.  I am either going to have to come up with the money to buy a copy of OS X or install some version of Linux.    I would rather have the copy of OS X because I need to learn more about that Operating system.  I want to be a computer tech and that will include working with lots of different systems.

Computer Names

December 19, 2008 by ymra

I am thinking about names for computers.  My desktop is Ymra_desktop.  My top is Ymra_laptop.  I tend towards descriptive I guess.  With me wanting to set up the compaq I am going to need to give it a name.  I am thinking that I will just call it the compaq.  The only other names I have called it are not really repeatable.

Distro Hopping

December 19, 2008 by ymra

I am thinking of doing some distro hopping.  I have downloaded fedora 10 and OpenSUSE 11.1.  I want to explore and learn.  That is why I got my desktop to start with.  I am going to set up my Compaq Presario 5070 and install a light weight linux on it.  Probably Vector Linux Light.  I might put netbsd on it instead.  I am feeling the need to tinker and vmware and virtual box just don’t cut it as experimentation platforms.
